This
chapter in the Dollarhide and Saginak’s (2012) textbook was just what I have
been waiting to read. The first thing
that caught my eye when reading is the prevention, intervention, and treatment
section. I think it is important to know
when to counsel and know when to refer for additional treatment. In the training that we receive, we do not
get the extensive training on how to counsel others that have long term issues
like depression. In that situation, it would be a good idea to refer that
student to an outside source. In
addition to the referral, the school counselor should still check up on the
student to see how they are doing and to show the student that you care about
them and their wellbeing.
Another section that caught my eye is the multicultural
section. In this section Dollarhide and
Saginak’s (2012) talk about how we need to counsel appropriately to those
different from the middle class, Christian, Euro-American worldview. I think that is really important to do that
and the class that I had in multicultural counseling has really helped me to
understand more about other cultures and how I can counsel them. I know that with my Euro-American background,
I need to be extra careful and sensitive to those that are different from me
when counseling.
Next Dollarhide and Saginak’s (2012) discuss about a
topic that I really like and is really important. This section is the legal and ethical
considerations. Ethics is a huge topic
in the counseling field. Counseling others
can be a big challenge and if something is done wrong or is ignored then
consequences will follow. In this
ethical section, Dollarhide and Saginak’s (2012) talk about students telling
the school counselor a variety of issues and a counselor needs to respond to
them as soon as they can. This means
they are ethically bound to help the student even if they have a ton of stuff
going on. School counselors might have
to cancel appointments in order to effectively help their students. Ethical issues are really important to be
aware of in counseling and I am glad they are addressed in this textbook.
While all of these chapters are important, the last topic
I would like to discuss is the creative strategies in counseling. I think as counselors, we really need to be
creative to help all the different kinds of students. Along with that we must realize that all
students have different intelligences and Dollarhide and Saginak’s (2012) put
them in the book. I think if we find
what the students intelligence is in then we could use different kinds of
strategies to help them in a way that would be comfortable for them. I thing this would also increase the trust
between the student and counselor. This section was good to read as well as the overall
chapter.
